after an unfortunate encounter with an akuma while in london, england on a business trip as adrien agreste, chat noir is forced to deal with an extremely unexpected, and furry, consequence. can ladybug help him return to his normal self? or will he be stuck for the rest of his life getting in touch with his wild side?

"do you believe in soulmates?" his little witch looks up from her mortar and pestle, setting a heavy book in front of him at the table. the weight of the textbook upsets the flame of their oil lamp enough to scatter and smudge the shadows around them, and he stares down at the page for something to do instead of looking at her glittering eyes.

of course i do, he wants to say. of course i believe in soulmates. i believe in it every time you look at me, marinette. it's as true as the demonic seal that stains my chest at our contract— it's as true as the demonic seals that burn on your ear lobes that you keep hidden with your hair at our contract.

but he's a coward. he's nothing more than a coward. the great chat noir, the legendary demon who has fought countless demonic wars, who has looked at the concept of death thousands of times, helpless to the way this witch looks at him. "it's very... fairy-tale-like. is it not?"

everyone knows the story.

child gets upset with parents (who are eventually shown to not be very unreasonable at all because morals), child runs away from home (or a close enough facsimile to fit the author's needs at least), child realizes that life on their own isn't as easy as they thought it would be (especially when the plot is specifically contrived to be against them), which prompts child to either return home on their own or be rescued (invariably resulting in an oversaturated supersaccharine ending where the reader is soundly beaten round the head with both premise and moral to thoroughly indoctrinate them to the concepts of obedience and submission), and everyone lives "happily" ever after (exactly the way they're told to).

in most versions of reality where adrien agreste runs away from home, it's a story he winds up living out until he tries again at thirteen when he decides to go to school. sometimes though, rarely, but sometimes, the story changes when he meets a baker's daughter.

the thing about all those cardboard cutout runaways? none of them had supernatural luck on their side.

eventually, gabriel agreste pushes too far.

eventually, adrien disappears.

slowly, ladybug notices that first, chat noir never used to be around so much, and second, there's definitely something wrong with him.

as ladybug watched the scene before her unfold she remembered something she'd heard her papa say once when explaining how important watching the stove was.

"be careful to turn off the stove if you need to leave. dying by fire is one of the worst ways to die."

after chat noir takes a terrible hit, marinette finds herself comforted by the sound of her partner's heartbeat. what happens when she starts using her friend's heartbeats to sooth herself too and finds that a certain pair of blond boys have similar heartbeats?

while marinette struggles with assuming her role as the new guardian, adrien has a problem of his own: starvation, due to his cranked-up metabolism as chat and his father's restrictive diet.

ladybug has been neglecting her kitty, but marinette realizes her mistake--almost too late.

he doesn't know what happens. one minute he's struggling against the leash spell, the next he's tripping on his own momentum as the magic suddenly snaps, as he tastes freedom for the first time in- in ever, probably.

adrien doesn't stop long enough to think about where he's going or why. he just bolts.

(marinette's spell goes wildly off-target, but it's a stroke of luck for everyone involved that it does).

"it doesn't matter if this luke orleia isn't a sith. he's a rogue force user enacting vigilante justice in the outer rim and calling himself a jedi," windu's holo flickers on his last word.

anakin thinks of the man he met on tatooine all those months ago. his— his maybe brother?

"i don't think he ever called himself a jedi."

all eyes turn on anakin where he stands next to his former master. he can feel the pressure of them.

"it doesn't matter if he's never said it, skywalker," windu taps open a holo displaying a ship painted with a pair of stars rising between flared wings that, from a certain view, could be mistaken for the jedi wings and sword of light.
